ZTE to Deliver the First Foldable Phone for the Masses
June 07, 2020
The China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA) reveals that ZTE has applied for a number of patents related to its upcoming foldable model. The CNIPA data shows that ZTE's foldable smartphone has an out-folding clamshell design, enabling the bending of the lower part of the handset screen toward the back of handset body, unlike the folding designs of either Samsung's Galaxy Fold or Huawei's Mate Xs. ZTE's foldable model has two rear cameras but without a front-facing camera, which indicates that the model might be designed for the entry-level foldable smartphone segment, as triple- or quad-camera setups have become standards for premium models, according to industry observers. The flexible panel is expected to be Royole as the two firms signed a strategic partnership deal on March 25, 2020 at a product event where Royole unveiled its third-generation flexible display products. Royole has claimed the production costs of its ULT-NSSP (ultra-low temperature-non silicone semiconductor process) flexible displays are about half the traditional OLED curved displays. Since ZTE's upcoming foldable model is likely to target the entry-level segment, the adoption of low-cost flexible display solutions from Royole is a must. But capacity at is low <4000 substrates/mo., yields are low and the sales of its own foldable smartphones quite limited. There is no timetable for the launch of ZTE's foldable phones, but the timing is likely to be in 2021.
