Xiaomi Designing a Clam Shell Foldable Phone to Compete with Z Fold and Razr
May04, 2020
ZDNet Korea claims that Xiaomi is building its own clamshell-style foldable phone, similar to Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip and Motorola’s Razr. Xiaomi has asked Samsung Display to supply it with flexible OLED panels so it can begin production on the new device, which the report claims will go into mass production in the second half of this year. The story’s source claims that Xiaomi has turned to Samsung Display (and is considering working with LG, too) because the other companies that produce flexible displays in China, CSOT and BOE Technology, which supply panels for Motorola’s Razr, have a “large gap in quality”. This is likely a reference to the proprietary ultra-thin glass panel Samsung used in the Z Flip, which sits just under a protective plastic layer. The difference between a flexible plastic panel and the premium feel of a glass display in a foldable phone is the difference between night and day. The news that a company like Xiaomi, which makes affordable but high-end Android phones, could mean a dramatic price reduction for foldable phones. Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip and Motorola’s Razr both clock in at $1380 and $1499 respectively. DSCC estimates Fold 2 price will range from $1,780 and $1,980; just about what the Fold is priced at today.
