With Dispute Settled, Huawei Gets Right to Qualcomm’s Broadband IP.
August 02, 2020
The settlement, which was the last in Qualcomm’s major mobile device vendor negotiations, covers the remaining payments on the interim contract the two companies upon, the first two calendar quarters of this year, and a long-term reciprocal license. While the ongoing dispute was settled, it does not give Huawei access to chip suppliers that use US made equipment. While some US companies are looking toward legal opinions as to the letter of the US law that will go into effect at the end of September, Huawei subsidiary HiSilicon still has no access to the major foundries that use equipment manufactured in the US. While settling the outstanding deal with Huawei is both important and lucrative for Qualcomm, they tacitly confirmed the delay in Apple’s 5G iPhone release as they reported a delay in SOCs for a ‘flagship 5G’ release. The company also expects a 15% decline in Q320’ smartphone shipments, partly due to the Apple delay and reduced expectations from most smartphone brands.
