Vehicle Production Forecast Down 22% Y/Y; Drives Displays Down 20%
IHS at DisplayWeek showed the history of global motor vehicle production and superimposed various economic adversities. COVID-19 seems to have had the most negative impact on production , which is expected to drop 22% Y/Y, 10% higher than the depression of 2008/09. However, the trend was set before COVID-19 as shipments were down 1.7% in 2018 and 8.0% in 2019 before the pandemic.

Display sales in 2020 for the most common app, center consoles are expected to be down 20% Y/Y, with the 7-8” size taking the biggest hit.

IHS is quite optimistic about the growth in pillar to pillar automotive displays as they forecast shipments growing from 100K in 2020 to over 2.5m in 2025.

The also forecast center stack displays in the 7 to 8”, 9 to 10” and 11”+ range to increase over the next 5 years as 4” displays almost disappear and the 5 to 6” display shipments are flat.
