US Trade Restrictions Limit Apple’s Camera Module Supply Chain
July 26, 2020
The US Commerce Department added a number of Chinese companies to its ‘entity’ list, requiring special licensing to import products from those on the entities list. The Commerce Department warns that ‘the availability of most license exceptions is limited’, meaning unless it is important to the US government, products from these companies will not be available to consumers. The new list includes Nanchang O-Film Technology, an Apple camera module supplier used in the iPhone 12 family. Approximately, 10% of Apple’s camera modules come from O-Film, although the primary supplier is LG Innotek. Apple has been patent dispute with an affiliate of Samsung that holds a significant IP related to telephoto advancements. Apple uses a number of other camera suppliers in South Korea but in the short term will likely focus on LG Innotek to offset the O-Film loss.
