TV Brands Start Passing Increased Panel Prices to Consumers
Since June 2020, quotes for 32-inch panels have moved up 150%, those for 43- 50- and 55-inch models have more than doubled, and those for 65- and 75-inch ones have gained 30-60%. TV ODMs have experienced losses as they tried to hold the TV set price, but most brand have started raising retail prices to pass the increased costs on to consumers even as the larger TVs, 50” and above are gaining share. Chinese TV brands have raised the quotes of their domestic prices by more than 30% since the third quarter of 2020, said sources, adding that Chinese vendors have also hiked their prices for overseas shipments since the first quarter of 2021 depending on different market conditions. OLED TVs are about to get a significant upgrade thanks to new display tech that will improve brightness by more than 20%. The changes are detailed in the YouTube video below (in Chinese but with captions in English). In the video, LG Display's Senior Research Engineer Ji-hyang Jang explains how the improvements were made by optimizing the emitting layer through the use of "highly-efficient light emitting material", which increased brightness by 20% on the new 83-inch next-generation OLED TV panel, as well as improving the color gamut and contrast ratio. The higher luminance will improve OLEDs performance for watching HDR content, which relies on a mix of brightness, contrast, and color control. LG Display showed its higher brightness 83-inch OLED panel at DisplayWeek, including a 48-inch ‘Bendable.
