TCL’s Spec Compromised but Competitive Flagship Smartphone
Flagship phones come from many OEMs and generally have a 6.67” OLED, >400 ppi, UPC, VRR, a high end processor, a big battery and a $1,000 price tag. TCL has released the 20L+, costing under $250, that cuts cost by using an LTPS LCD, medium resolution with max luminance at 500 nits, 60Hz, a slower processor, but a big battery.

The screen of the TCL 20L+ is 6.67” IPS LCD, 500 nits (peak). The FHD+ Display is 1080x2400 at 395 ppi. TCL used display technology that isn’t affected by polarized sunglasses, called circular polarization which is TuV Rheinland-certified. The refresh rate needs to be adjusted for the 20L+ is 60 Hz.
The TCL 20L+ utilizes the Snapdragon 662, which is less powerful than Qualcomm’s higher-end processors but uses less power. The battery is a 5000 mAh battery, larger than some flagship phones. With lower resolution, lowered powered processor and large battery results in longer battery life. The TCL 20L+ utilizes a tactile power button that doubles as a fingerprint scanner, which takes a little time to get used to. The scanner is fast and effective enough that just from pressing the power button to turn on the screen, the touch is enough to unlock the phone and go straight into the home screen, The 20L+ includes the standard audio jack, and the output is clean and well-balanced. |
The phone is equipped with 4 rear cameras and a front facing camera The main 64 megapixel camera is supported with AI, which is effective in capturing natural toned photos with good detail, especially in HDR mode. The AI on the TCL UI camera doesn't over-sharpen images but does it just enough to make things interesting. The main camera covers the 1x, 2x and 4x zoom, which means it strictly remains in the digital zoom realm. The wide angle camera matches the color tone of the main camera. The two other functional cameras are the 2 megapixel macro camera and the 8 megapixel wide angle camera, while the fourth bottom camera is there to help create better depth in portraits.
Figure 3 is the front facing 16-megapixel camera is more than sufficient for video conferencing and includes an adjustable 'beauty mode' for selfies. |
