Foxconn, Wisconsin and LCDs – No Sign of Progress
October 07, 2019 On September 12 when Foxconn announced the construction of a nine-story glass spherical building that would serve as Foxconn’s data center, however by the end of the day Foxconn withdrew those plans to explore other options including a more traditional building that would make both manufacturing and office space available. The new potential plan is for a 260,000 ft2 building (a bit over 5 acres), a hair smaller than the 460 acres originally planned. Along with this new building, Foxconn is said to be planning to build a smaller factory, said to be a ‘shopping center’ for manufacturing, and will look for other businesses to help fill the excess space. These new buildings are being constructed by Foxconn Industrial Internet, a public company in China (as of 6/2018) whose major shareholders are subsidiaries of Foxconn, but the agreement that the state of Wisconsin made with Foxconn does not cover what amounts to outside construction. The State of Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation confirmed that FII is not party to the original Foxconn agreement, which would have to be modified and approved before FII could receive subsidies from the local government. There is building construction at the site, which is about twice the size of the general purpose structure, ‘manufacturing shopping center’, but Foxconn is likely to fall behind their hiring schedule. Foxconn was planning to cancel the entire project in February until the company received a call from President Trump. There still is no hint of construction activities for the Gen 6 LCD Fab.
