SK Materials and JNC Form JV to Produce OLED Dopants
SK Materials and Japan's JNC created a joint venture to produce OLED materials as part of a move to evolve into a top-tier materials company. SK will have a 51 percent stake in the company ― to JNC's 49 percent ― and the headquarters will be located in Korea. Its initial paid in capital is set to be around 48 billion won. SK has a vast production and sales network, while JNC has OLED-related original patents and technologies. Utilizing the joint company, SK will manufacture key OLED materials including blue dopants, for which JNC has an original patent that it claims is recognized as providing superior technology.
BenQ Materials president Ray Liu, announced volume production of OLED circular polarizers for wearable applications in the fourth quarter of 2020, while also starting sampling related polarizers for foldable smartphones. The new OLED circular polarizers are now being shipped mainly to Chinese panel makers, expecting demand for circular polarizers from the wearable and smartphone sectors to continue to expand. Liu indicated that all of its three polarizer lines are operating at full capacity, after resolving some bottlenecks associated with the added capacity for the circular polarizers. Despite the tight supply of LCD polarizers, the company is cautious about the future development of the LCD industry and as a result, it will relocate more of its resources for developing new products for OLED and 8K applications, Liu noted.
