SK IE, Late to the Cover Lens Market, Ships First Batch of CPI
July 26, 2020
SK IE Technology (SKIET), an advanced material business unit under South Korea’s SK Innovation, said Sunday it has embarked on its first shipment of hard-coating colorless polyimide (CPI) films used to protect flexible displays from external shocks this month for an unnamed global customer. The CPI films to be sold under the brand name of Flexible Cover Window (FCW) will be rolled out at the company’s newly built plant in Jeungpyeong, Chungbuk, south of Seoul, the company added. SKIET said it has been chosen by a global smartphone brand as an FCW supplier in recognition of its optimized manufacturing technology. The two companies agreed not to disclose the name of the smartphone maker or financial term. The durable CPI films are now competing with UTG as cover lens for foldable, rollable and curved display panels. They offer protection of the display panel from scratches and shocks with no signs of material fatigue, making them an ideal cover especially for foldable phones. SKIET completed the construction of the Jeungpyeong plant at the end of last year. The successful supply contract is the result of `deep change` that SK Innovation has been pursuing, said SKIET chief executive Roh Jae-sok.
The CPI films were used for Samsung's first-generation foldable phone ― Galaxy Fold. Because the films are vulnerable to external scratches, Samsung's display affiliate ― Samsung Display ― recently commercialized ultra-thin glass (UTG) as a material for use in foldable displays SKIET said its vertically-integrated manufacturing process would make it possible to better respond to new requests from potential clients. "In particular, it accounts for ― the raw material synthesis to produce Flexible Cover Window products, the manufacturing of curved CPI film attached to display screens, a special hard coating that improves shock resistance, as well as a functional coating that prevents fine scratches or fingerprints, reduces light reflection, and keeps the surface undamaged even when it comes in contact with certain chemicals," it added.
