SDC Reports that QD-OLED on Schedule for 2021 Release
At a meeting held by the South Korean Ministry of Commerce in Seoul that discussed ‘reorganization plans’ (poor choice of words) for Korean companies making the transition from LCD to QD/OLED, Samsung Display indicated that it was on schedule to produce QD/OLED displays next year. Samsung Display recently sold their Gen 8.5 LCD fab in Suzhou, China to ChinaStar The intent of the meeting itself was to approve ‘reorganization plans’ for a number of South Korean businesses that are part of the display supply chain. With SDC’s withdrawal, these companies are facing substantial changes in their business plans, with a number banding together to gain help from the government under the Corporate Vitalization Act, which can suspend certain regulations, give tax support, funding, and simplify a number of legal procedures. Samsung Display is included in the ‘reorganization’, although most of the companies are considerably smaller, but SDC, aside from originally committing to spending $11.2b through 2025 to build out the technology, also stated that they would share manufacturing process know-how with the companies involved in order to more rapidly develop a QD/OLED ecosystem.
