Samsung to Ship 1m OLED Notebooks in 2021
Samsung Electronics Co. introduced the all-new next-generation, mobile computing-optimized devices, the Galaxy Book Pro and the Galaxy Book Pro 360. Samsung expects to ship 1m of the new OLED notebooks this year, and while that will be less than 1% of total notebook volume this year, on an area equivalent basis, 1m notebook units (50% each of both sizes) would utilize over 6 times the surface area needed to produce 1m 6.5” smartphones, keeping Samsung Display’s rigid OLED fab at higher utilization rates than if they depended on smartphones. To deliver new mobile computing approaches, Samsung collaborated with the market-leading companies Intel and Microsoft. As a result, Samsung enabled the Galaxy Book Pro Series to provide continuous workflow between PCs and smartphones across OSs. The Galaxy Book Pro Series provides advanced mobile computing for improved connectivity, allowing users to join a broader Galaxy ecosystem. In addition to offering ultra-portability and an expansive multi-device ecosystem, the new releases also support users’ creativity, entertainment, and productivity. The Galaxy Book Pro Series comes with a 65W ultra-fast charger with a USB Type-C adapter. Besides providing secure 5G and LTE support, the new laptops are Wi-Fi 6E-ready, producing faster 6GHz connectivity and more bandwidth.

The new PCs are the company’s first-ever releases to include Super AMOLED displays. World-leading inspection, testing, and verification company SGS also granted the Super AMOLED displays with the Eye Care Display Certification and the displays’ Intelligent Color Engine technology fine-tunes colors, presenting more vivid games and movies and enhancing photo-editing functions. In partnership with Intel, Samsung powered the Galaxy Book Pro Series with the Intel Iris Xe and Intel Core Processor. The PCs’ Intelligent Performance Manager adjusts to the users’ surroundings and system load, allowing easy and steady multitasking. The PCs include the Samsung Studio Plus, where users could access screen and voice recording functions and other editing tools.
Q221 Notebooks Forecasted to Reach 62m in Global notebook shipments not including devices with detachable keyboards went down 8.7% sequentially in the first quarter of 2021 as demand for education and gaming models remained robust and previously unfulfilled orders were delivered, according to Digitimes Research. With second-quarter 2021 being the traditional peak season for the education procurement segment and demand from the enterprise and consumer segments expected to rise, overall shipments in the quarter will grow sequentially. Although component shortages will continue, brand vendors will continue pushing their shipments to more than 62 million units in the second quarter of 2021 , up around 10% from a quarter ago, Digitimes Research's numbers show. The top-6 brands will all see sequential shipment increases in the second quarter. Hewlett-Packard's (HP) Chromebook shipments will continue breaking its record in the quarter, while Lenovo's shipments will underperform its competitors due to Japan's GIGA School project reaching an end. Dell will see brisk shipment growth in the second quarter as it steps up efforts for North America's education and enterprise segments.
Apple is focusing mainly on shipments of its iPad Pros and iMacs in the second quarter, resulting in weaker notebook shipments than most of its competitors. Asustek Computer with its gaming notebooks and Acer with its Chromebooks are expected to see double-digit sequential shipment growths in the second quarter.
Samsung Electronics will also experience a major on-quarter shipment increase in the second quarter as the Korean vendor now treats notebooks as one of its major business directions. Taiwanese ODMs, Wistron and Pegatron will see shipment shares increases from US and Taiwanese clients, respectively in the second quarter, compared to the first. Samsung has not been a major player in the notebook space, and while they increased sales of their Chromebook series to 2m units last year (4x previous year), and sold 10m Galaxy Tablets, they don’t get close to notebook leader Lenovo’s 55m notebooks last year or the #2 Hewlett-Packard’s 52m units.
