Samsung to Increase Foldable Display Capacity
The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2, set for release in September, is expected to be warmly received in the global smartphone market. new foldable OLED panel lines if Apple’s launch of a foldable phone is visible. Samsung intends to increase its production of foldable displays and will be soliciting additional customers other than parent Samsung Electronics. In March, SDC’s foldable output was ~250,000 to 260,000 units, with expectations of bringing that to 600,000 units by mid-year and 1m units by the end of this year. Not only would this mean increasing foldable OLED display panel output, but also increasing capacity for assembling display modules, which would be sold to customers for their own applications. While unconfirmed, module assembly reportedly, take place in Vietnam. Producing foldable displays is relatively similar to producing flexible OLED displays but module assembly is more complex and requires what would be considered dedicated assembly lines, hence the need for additional capacity in Vietnam, Philoptics, which provides cutting tools just announced a $19.5m revised order from SDC with a delivery schedule that begins now and extends thru the end of October. SDC’s original expectations were for delivery in May and July, indicating that SDC’s foldable production timeline could be delayed 60 to 90 days.
