Samsung to Convert L7-2 Fab from LCDs to OLEDs by August ‘21
Samsung is converting its Asan Gen 7 fab to OLEDs. The L7-2 fab had been closed and was not one that Samsung Visual wanted SDC to continue operating to support its LCD TV panel demand.
Korean construction company YMC signed a contract for the dismantlement of LCD equipment with Samsung Construction & Trading. An affiliate of the Samsung Group. The contract was signed on April 1 and was to extend through July 31, although it was recently shortened to July 20, but increased in size from $15.7m to $18.5m. Samsung started taking bids on the L7-2 equipment, and possibly L8-2-1.
The L7-2 line, in production since 2008 with a peak capacity of 180,000 Gen 7 sheets/month, will be converted into a Gen 6 OLED fab for ~$1.0B. The revitalized fab is expected to produce 15,000 sheets/month to SDC’s OLED and there will be room for additional capacity to be added at a later date. The final decision will be made this year. The conversion improves the timing of SDC’s road map for the A3, (now called A4E) which was projected to complete Phase 2 between 9/23 to 3/24.
Samsung is also investing in backplane technology to make up for the 30% lost capacity when they converted the A3 fab from LTPS to LTPO.
Samsung will also reconfigure part of the Gen 8.5 (L8-1) into an OLED fab for IT panels. The OLED configuration would be side-by-side RGB and the backplane IGZO. The space used is about ¼ of L8. Since this would be the first time that a Gen 8.5 would be used for side-by-side, likely cut in 4 pieces, they are also considering a Gen 6.
SDC is expected to produce large LCD TV panels at the L8-2 fab through 2022. Regarding the next Phase of QD-OLEDs, no decision has yet been made about entering Phase 2.
