Samsung Mobile to Use BOE OLEDs in Low End Smartphones
The on again/off again deal between BOE and Samsung Mobile to provide flexible OLED displays is apparently back on again. The flexible OLEDs from BOE are likely to be used in the Samsung M series, which is a very low-priced line targeted for the Indian market, with prices ranging from $460 (M62) down to $96 (M02s). The M62 is based on an OLED display with the others based on LCD. The report indicates that BOE will be providing flexible OLED displays for the series, which would imply the M62 model, the only one with a price point that can support flexible OLED panels. BOE has been supplying Samsung Mobile with LCDs as SDC no longer makes small/medium them.
The report indicates BOE is offering a highly discounted price to garner favor with Samsung. Last year when the purported deal was leaked, BOE did not qualify, but BOE claims an 80% yield and that they have passed Apple’s acceptance tests for the iPhone 12. Samsung Mobile has been seeking an alternative to the higher priced flexible panels offered by SDC, so using BOE in a lower cost smartphone represents a low risk opportunity to apply pricing pressure on SDC. The relationship between Samsung mobile and Samsung Visual (TVs) has always been toxic as the margin battles are within Samsung Electronics are rampant. SDC is very active in marketing outside Samsung Electronics. IN 2020, they shipped 401m panels.
