Samsung Mobile Ends its Foray into UTG for Foldables
Samsung Electronics has suspended its program to develop a thicker Ultra-This Glass (UTG) for foldable devices. The company had been working with UTG supplied by Corning and laser technology to develop a thicker, but still bendable glass substrate that could substitute for the materials currently being supplied by its affiliate Samsung Display. SDC uses UTG supplied by Schott together with Dowoo Insys a small South Korean glass processor. The cover glass has proven to require some modification to harden and thicken and Samsung Mobile wanted a replacement.
But, the effort proved more difficult than expected and Samsung will stick with Dowoo Insys, for which SDC has a 27% stake.
