Samsung Leads World w/6.7m 5G Smartphones Shipped in 2019
January 10, 2020

Samsung Electronics revealed its 5G smartphone sales for 2019, as they were the first to release a 5G smartphone, the Galaxy S10 5G in April, giving them the longest selling period, although four competitive brands released 5G smartphone one month later. Samsung capturing ~40%hare, based on a composite of 2019 5G smartphone shipments from a number of sources, although some estimates claim up to 54% as 11 brands released 30 (up from our original estimate of 28) different models in 2019. The ASP of 5G smartphones has been declining. Consumers thinking of replacing an older smartphone would logically upgrade to a 5G device, and price sensitivity will still be the biggest factor in that decision and the total number of smartphone units sold in 2020 will reflect how quickly 5G smartphone brands are able to bring prices down close to 4G equivalents rather than a burning desire among consumers to upgrade to 5G at any cost.
