Samsung Eliminates Polarizer and Reduces OLED Panel Power Consumption by 25%
Samsung Display Company (SDC) introduced a new generation of OLED panel called “Eco²OLED”. The company changed the pixel layout on its upcoming Z Fold 3 OLED panels from the Diamond pixel layout to a new layout called “Round Diamond Pixel™”. The new pixel arrangement includes a black PDL, which 1) defines the pixel area for evaporation and 2) protects/maintains/keeps the height of EL material. Changed the PDL color to black improves the performance of the BM and color filter. The unique role of BM and color filter is to remove polarizer. However, the performance of this combination s less than the polarizer in terms of light leakage and sunlight readability. SDC believes the minor difference is not noticeable. Eliminating the polarizer, increases the transmittance of the display by 33%. Such an increase, when throttled to the light levels of previous displays, results in a power saving of 25%, which should improve battery life.
