Samsung Electric to Provide Camera Modules for the iPhone
August 02, 2020
EBEST Securities in Korea reported that Samsung Electric was placed on Apple’s iPhone lens vendor list indicating possible use integrated in early 2021 iPhones and 2022 iPhones. Currently, Apple iPhone’s top 3 camera module vendors are Taiwan’s Largan Precision, Genius Electronic Optical and Japan’s Kantatsu. Etnews said that Samsung is supplying camera modules for entry iPhones, which could be the result of the U.S. government’s economic restrictions prohibiting Apple using Chinese components. O-film, one of Apple’s camera module makers, name was restricted by the Department of Commerce. In 2018, O-film acquired Fujifilm Japan’s IPs and its Tenjin fab with regard to lens technology. Etnews wrote that O-film’s acquisition of Fujifilm was the result of a request by Apple. At least 41 Chinese component producers are listed on Apple’s iPhone vendor list. Japan’s newspaper Nihon Keizai reported that less than 20 Chinese vendors were on Apple’s vendor list in 2012, but the number doubled and now 41 Chinese vendors are listed.
