Samsung Converts A3 Line to LTPO And Drops Capacity From 105,000 to 70,000 Substrates/Month
Samsung Display will convert its A3 OLED line dedicated to Apple from LTPS to LTPO. Samsung Display calls it LTPO TFT technology Adaptive Frequency. It has applied the technology first on Samsung Electronics’ Galaxy Note20 Ultra. Most recently, it was used for OLED panels in the Asus ROG5 smartphone. Apple is planning to use LTPO TFT OLED panels for the higher-tier models in its iPhone series launching later this year. SDC will be the exclusive vendor for LTPO TFT OLED panels. LG Display and BOE will provide LTPS panels. LGD also makes LTPO backplanes but their capacity was insufficient to meet Apple’s needs.
UBI Research said Samsung Display has secured 30,000 Gen 6 substrates per month capacity for LTPO TFT OLED panels on its Apple-dedicated production line last year. Production capacity drops when LTPS is converted to LTPO due to the addition of 5 additional masks. SDC converted A3 into Y-Octa last year. When the conversion to LTPO TFT is complete within the first half of 2021, the production capacity of line will be dropped to 70,000 substrates/ month from the previous 105,000.
BOE has also begun putting in equipment to build an Apple dedicated line at its B12 plant at Chongqing since December. The line should begin production in November. BOE got the go-ahead from Apple to supply LTPS OLED panels in December last year.
