Rollable TV Ready for Release at $84K
December 15, 2019
LG Electronics has indicated that it is now taking pre-orders for its 65” rollable OLED TV, with an official release in 2 to 3 weeks. While expected delivery times have yet to be determined, those who place pre-orders now should expect to receive the sets within a month or two, with very preliminary production underway. LGE will show the rollable unit at a premier store location, and is currently determining which South Korean retailer will get the initial demo units, but this will not be a unit that will be sold in typical mass production volumes, or under normal sales circumstances given its price of 100m won, which comes to ~$83,759 US, but to encourage consumers to pony up, the company, while not offering discounts on the rollable itself, is contemplating offering LG Signature™ appliances to those that pre-order, we assume at some discounted rate, and possibly some gift vouchers.
In 2015. LGE released a 105” UHD LCD TV for 120m won, which is just over $100,000 and a lesser priced gold plated 71” Plasma TV designed for Mid-East clients in 2004, that cost a mere 80m won, or $67,000 US, so you won’t have “the most expensive TV ever” bragging rights if you put in your order, but at least you would run a close second. LG Display plans to nearly halve the production of its LCD panels for TVs in 2020 to switch to OLED panels in the face of falling LCD prices, according to industry source on Nov. 27. Concurrently, sales of OLED panels for TVs are expected to take up 60% of its total TV panel sales. This year, LCD revenues were three times that of OLED panels. In 2018, TV panels accounted for 40% of LG Display’s sales, while IT panels accounted for 36% and smartphone panels 24%. The figures changed in the third quarter of this year, with TV panels dropping to 36%. The display maker plans to maintain the supplies of IT panels, which have been profitable. Globally, LG Display is expected to be the second-largest the maker in terms of LCD TV panels this year, trailing BOE. Next year, however, LG Display is likely to fall to fifth place, following BOE, CSOT, Innolux and HKC. We plan to downsize at the P7, P8 LCD TV factories in order to focus more on our strengths and streamline what’s necessary,” said LG Display CFO Seo Dong-hee at LG Display’s recent third quarter earnings announcement. The LCD lines at the Gen-8 P8 factory in Paju is now expected to be halted. IHS said Display is estimated to ship up to 48.6 million LCD panels for TV this year, but this figure is to fall to 27 million in 2020 to show a 44% fall … South Korean display makers are expected to cut up to 36 million in terms of LCD TV panel shipments. Worldwide, the shipment volume is like to decline by 6-7%.”
In LG’s Guangzhou Gen 8.5 OLED fab Joosung Engineering’s TFT CVD will be used for MMG instead of Applied Materials. With the Guangzhou plant, our annual OLED panel production capacity for TVs will go up to 4 million units this year, then to 7 million in 2020 and 10 million in 2021,”said Yoon Soo-young, head of LG Display’s Display Research Center.
