Quantum Dots Performance Report Card
April 22, 2019

Quantum dots are becoming a candidate for enhancing the display space and have the potential to challenge other display modalities in a more significant way a few years down the road.  They have plenty of challenges, but from a purely technical standpoint, QDs are close to perfect in light conversion and could potentially compete in self-illuminating material.  QD developers have been making great progress and the next table shows the changes over the last six years in a number of key characteristics.

The specs provided by the source are incomplete and for example, don’t show the initial luminance levels for lifetime, without which the measurement is meaningless. One concern would be the quantum yield of 93%, which we interpret as a measure ability of the QD to convert light from the source color to the target color and raises the question of what happens to the unconverted light, for example in the case of the various approaches to OLED/QD hybrids.
