Q320 Desktop Shipments Hit New High, but Desktops Fall by 27% Y/Y
Canalys reported global notebook shipments were 64.6m units (as much as the record high of Q4 2011 when notebook shipments were 64.6 million) as demand surged due to the second wave of COVID-19 in many countries and companies continued to invest in longer-term transitions to remote working. Shipments of notebooks and mobile workstations grew 28.3% Y/Y, while desktop and desktop workstations, shrank by 27.1%. IN terms of share notebooks grew to 81.6% from 71.5%, leaving desktop to drop to 18.4% share. It is likely that desktop and workstations will fall to under 10% in 2021, if the trends continue. YTD PC shipments are up 2% Y/Y to 201.2m, and would indicate that total shipments for 2020 would be flat or up slightly vs. 2019, despite the COVID-19 impact in Q120, where shipments were down 20% Y/Y.
