Q318 TV Panel Shipments Rose 10.1% Y/Y to 75.1m
December 03, 2018

Global TV panel unit shipments grew 9.3% sequentially and 10.1% Y/Y to 75.1 million units in Q318. In terms of area shipments, global TV panel shipments also expanded by 13.2% sequentially and 14.9% on year in the third quarter, according to data from China-based Sigmaintell Consulting. BOE Technology was #1 as it shipped 14.6 million TV panels in the Q318. Inventory build-ups for the Double 11 shopping festival and peak-season demand helped push TV panel shipment growth, both in terms of unit and area shipments, said the consulting firm.  Panel shipments from BOE have continued to grow as its 8.5G line in Fuzhou is now running at full capacity, and the company is also ramping up output from its first 10.5 fab in Hefei. BOE has also continued to optimize its product mix with shipments of 65-inch and above panels increasing 200% sequentially in the third quarter. The efforts helped the vendor remain in third place in terms of area shipments. LG Display was #2 in unit shipments reaching 12.28 million units, up 5% sequentially, and took the #1 position in area shipments leading in 55-, 65-, 75- inch and other large-size segments, Sigmaintell noted.

Innolux was #3 in shipments with 12 million units, buoyed by a 45% sequential growth in shipments of 50-inch panels in the quarter. The firm also reduced its inventory. Samsung Display ranked #4 in unit shipments but #2 in area shipments thanks to strong growth in shipments of 75- and 83-inch panels. CSoT shipped nearly 10 million TV panels in the third quarter and was #5, with its shipments of 32-, 43- and 55-inch panels growing significantly. AUO was #6 with its third-quarter shipments staying flat sequentially as the company has been shifting its focus to high value-added and high-end display products. In terms of panel sizes, shipments of 32-inch TV panels grew 8% sequentially in the third quarter and accounted for 31% of global total TV panel shipments. Shipments of 39- to 45-inch panels were down 1%, 55-inch panels dipped 4.1%, and shipments of 65-inch and above sizes expanded 44% and 80%, respectively.
LG was #1 in revenue more than 78% greater than the 2ndhighest, AUO.

What isn’t clear in the report is that Samsung shipped 3m sq. m more than AUO, but had $600m less in revenue.
