“2019 will be the commercialization year of ‘Zero air pollution, blue-hazard free candlelight OLED products”. On December 7th Prof. J. Jou, the inventor of candlelight OLED, and the Soft Electronic Research Group of Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) held a press conference at Tsinghua University to reveal the candlelight OLED desklamp to the general public. Witnessed by the delegates from industry, government, academia, medical, publishing houses, and artists, candlelight OLED desklamp is officially announced and ready for purchase. Candlelight OLED based lighting products can now formally enter the 4 trillion (NTD) global lighting market. This "omni-friendly" light source will inevitably rewrite the history of lighting.

“The long longing candlelight OLED is finally made commercially available especially as fueled up by the 20 millions support from the Ministry of Economic Affair’s Industrial Value Creation Program, after 27 years of research on OLED." said Prof. Jou. The very first product is a human eye- and physiology-friendly candlelight OLED desklamp. It is 13 times better than the so-called eye-friendly white light desklamp from the perspective of eye protection and 10 times healthier in terms of physiology. A comprehensive book would be needed to explain clearly why there is a gigantic difference between “good light” and “bad light”, Prof. Jou emphasized.
"What kind of light color is most welcome by the public?" The answer is candlelight OLED! Professor Jou reported that according to their recent collaboration with ITRI 60% of the general public love orange-white candlelight OLED over those of the yellowish and light yellowish white OLEDs. For the same yellowish white light, 56% preferred OLED while 44 % LED.
“While editing Prof. Jou’s new book, “Embrace Darkness: The most efficient sleeping method from a scientist” I was so much inspired that I informed my friends and family about the concept of embracing darkness to have better sleep.” Indeed, the birth of candlelight OLED is really exciting just like the publication of a good book, said Ms. Feng Yi Chen, Chief Editor of Business Weekly. The innovative invention and the stories of Professor Jou will all be included in the new book published by Business Weekly. In the spring of 2019, readers will be able to get first-hand information to connect with the latest technology for health care: What’s the origin of the phototoxicity? Why the candlelight OLED is so romantic and friendly as well? How can we use a right light to protect our eyes, safeguard our sleep and maintain our youth?
Dr. Po ting, Yeh, the attending physician of National Taiwan University Hospital, emphasized that medical research has confirmed that excessive blue light emission can cause damage to the retina as well as the macular lesion. The source of blue light in nature is the sun. So we recommend to the people to wear sunglasses in hot summer to reduce the exposure to blue light and avoid macular lesion. Besides, it can also decrease UV light penetration into the eyes thereby preventing cataract. A recent study shows that the amount of blue light emission from LED is far more than that of a tungsten bulb. The scientific community is concerned at the fact that this cumulative exposure to blue light every day may cause damage to retinal photoreceptor cells.
“Retinal damage caused by short-term high-brightness LED light sources is often heard”, Dr. Yeh reminded. He had treated a 30-year-old woman who suffered from a black spot in her eye due to 5-minutes exposure to LED flashlight while she was trying to pull out the eyelash from her eye.
“She nervously came to my clinic for medical help. At that time, her eyesight was only 0.4 that is much worse than a normal healthy eyesight of 1.0. In general eye examination it is difficult to find these abnormalities. However, vis advanced macular optical imaging with optical tomography, it was confirmed that the eye was affected and the retinal photoreceptor cells were significantly damaged. Fortunately, after six months of treatment, her eyesight got recovery to 0.8, Dr. Yeh Said.
Dr. Yeh also indicated that an improper light source can't provide a human-friendly lighting environment and will be harmful to our eyes. Therefore, we hope to find a healthy lighting device that can protect our eyes and provide sufficient brightness. That is why our academic community has been working hard on it.
Excessive exposure of artificial night light is harmful to human health and might cause insomnia, obesity, type-2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease in the short term. In the long term, it might increase the risk of breast and prostate cancers, emphasized Mr. Ying Mei Liu, Dean of the School of Nursing, National Yang-Ming University.
“ Let's be retro and light up a candle. This is the ancient wisdom and it looks romantic! But the harm of PM 2.5 can't be prevented!” said Ms. Liu. PM2.5 can enter human body directly through the alveoli, increasing the risk of cardiovascular disease. Candlelight OLED releases no PM2.5 and is devoid of blue light and free of air pollution, meeting what we need.
Chih Hui, Chuang, a surrealist artist known as "Taiwan Dali", has a unique and avant-garde creative style. When he meets Professor Jou who masters advanced OLED technology, the most artistic visual feast of the contemporary era has been inspired. Curator Min Su, Yang tells the beauty of the combination of technology and art. Nowadays, the lighting with blue light emission has the risk of fading and destruction of artworks and cultural relics. This time, the candlelight OLED light source is used for woodcarving creation. The light source can represent dream and freedom, and also bring a sense of warm dependency. Moreover, it can protect the art work. In the future, he hopes to incorporate this "good light" concept into his own creations to create a new era of art.
Since 2013, Wisechip Company has been cooperating with National Tsing Hua University to develop candlelight OLED. With the help of the Ministry of Economic Affairs, the production line of candlelight OLED has been established. So far, OLED panels show outstanding performance in terms of power efficacy, brightness and lifetime. The technology of mass production is almost ready. It is expected that a significant market share can be abtained with this proprietary healthy OLED, said Dr. Yung Cheng Tsai, the Vice President of Wisechip Semiconductors.
"Won't candlelight OLED be too dark or not suitable for reading?" Jou' s team and students led by Li Ying, Yao, principal of the Shu Guang Girls' Senior High school, found that the candlelight OLED can be tuned very bright and highly suitable for reading. They also found that screen light setting has a profound impact on browsing clarity and health. In addition, the yeasts used to make the biofuel, alcohol, also have their preferred light color. The three outstanding studies have been accepted and will be presented in the conference OPTIC held in Kaohsiung ? on December 8.
The president Jui Chun, Chung from Yohki-lens indicates that, during the past 20 years, the original patent of anti-blue light technology owned by Yohki-lens produced anti-blue light lenses that have an excellent market reputation and can improve the visual contrast clarity of wearers. Moreover, through the patented measurement of the research team of Professor Jou from Tsing Hua University, it was found that the lens are extremely high eye- and physiology-friendly. The highly anti-blue light lens tested are made from 17 patents of anti-blue light technology and have different applications, including general eye protection for 3C products, filter after cataract surgery, medical assistance for macular degeneration and pressure relief for glaucoma. These lens have 1 to 4 times better protection to eyes from the perspective of alleviating light retinitis. On the other hand, they also have nearly 100 times better effect on reducing the suppression of melatonin secretion. The anti-blue light glasses from Yohki-lens are truly deserved.
