Panel Makers Broaden their Supply Chain for Micro LED Vendors
March 08, 2020
Samsung Electronics has added Epistar to its roster of LED suppliers as it expands its modular approach to micro-LED TVs. Earlier this year the company previewed four sizes of what they call micro-LED TVs (75”, 88”, 93” and 110”) that they expect to launch later this year, although based on estimates of the cost of producing such TVs, they will be priced at a very significant premium to other TV modalities. Thus far, Samsung had used China based San’an as the primary micro-LED supplier and assembly technology from PlayNitride for earlier micro-LED products, but given the consumer oriented nature of the sets to be released later this year, they were likely looking to diversify their supply base. Samsung has been evaluating a number of tools used in the placement of micro-LEDs into modules but has yet to set a production date for high volume production.
CSoT and Xiamen San’an Integrated Circuit (Saran-IC) set up a joint-venture lab for developing micro LED materials, manufacturing processes and equipment. The lab entails initial investment of CNY300 million (US$42.9 million), with CSoT and San’an-IC holding 55% and 45% stakes respectively, the sources said. San'an Optoelectronics - the parent company of Sanab-IC - in 2018 signed with Samsung Electronics for a 3-year cooperation to develop micro LED technology, and in July 2019 began setting up a mini/micro LED production base with target annual production capacity of 2.1 million mini LED wafers and 260,000 micro LED wafers in central China, the sources noted.
China-based display panel maker BOE Technology and US-based startup Rohinni in January 2019 established a JV for developing mini LED-backlit LCD and micro LED displays.
