OPPO Radical Three-Fold Phone Concept Defined
OPPO teamed with Japanese design studio nendo (founded by Oki Sato) to present a radical three-fold phone concept at the 4th China International Industrial Design Expo (CIIDE) that has this year’s theme as “New Designs, New Trends, New Momentum.” Dubbed as the slide-phone, the design pursues “a comfortable relationship between people and their products through a human-centric approach to design.” Adapting a caterpillar-like moniker for the folding mechanism, the concept phone unfolds to a 7-inch screen with a slim profile, that’s wider than most smartphone screens. When unfolded to the first fold it reveals the 1.5-inch screen area for basic notifications or functions like music player controls, call history, or more. The second fold reveals the 3.15-inch screen space for clicking photos, video calls, or playing games. Third and the final fold reveals the full widescreen for multitasking, taking panoramic photos, or playing games with an on-screen controller on each side. It even comes with a stylus for professionals, like the one on the Galaxy Note 20 series. The positioning of buttons on the sides is such that they permit multiple actions depending on the positioning of the folded form. Putting the phone in mute, toggling volume up or down, and changing the filters while taking photos – all can be one with these buttons. The phone can be used in a partially open position when it is slightly bent – a new possibility for use.

On the front, OnePlus has selected a flat punch-hole screen that measures 6.55-inches. The hands-on photos corroborate the presence of slim bezels, although overall the device closely resembles its predecessor — the OnePlus 8T — and won't be a massive leap forward in terms of design. It will have VRR up to 120Hz and HDR content. The resolution of the display is 2400 x 1080p (Full-HD+) and the aspect ratio is 20:9. On its side a metal frame is revealed that's presumably made out of aluminum. The top is home to a microphone and the bottom is where the all-important USB-C port and speaker are located. The OnePlus 9 5G includes the new Snapdragon 888 chipset and supports 8GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage, with no option to expand via microSD cards. The presence of Android 11 and OxygenOS has been corroborated too, and so has the 4,500mAh battery. PhoneArena suspects that the 12-megapixel and 4-megapixel resolutions listed for the rear and front cameras, respectively, will translate into 48-megapixel and 16-megapixel sensors on the final units.
