OPPO 2nd Place Q221 Smartphone Finish Driven by Multi-brand Strategy

OPPO and its subsidiaries (the OPPO, OnePlus and realme brands) captured second spot in the global smartphone market during May 2021 with a 16% share of unit sales, followed by Apple at 15%, according to Counterpoint Research’s May Monthly Market Pulse Report. Xiaomi was fourth with 14% share.

The OPPO family seems to be the next dominant brand to come from China replacing the previous leader, the beleaguered Huawei.
OPPO utilizes the following brands as part of its global strategy:
  • OPPO – offline and mid-to low-end smartphones
  • realme – online lower-tier smartphones; set up as a fully owned subsidiary
  • OnePlus – premium smartphones; now merged with OPPO.

Each brand independently raises brand awareness in their respective areas, and this strategy has shown good results so far.
