OLED Smartphone Panels to Reach Near 50% Share in 2021 with Sufficient DDICs

According to TrendForce , 39.8 percent of all smartphones sold this year and 45 percent of total handset sold next year will have OLED displays.  Although, the display driver IC supply for OLED panels is currently unable to keep up with demand TrendForce added that these chipsets are larger than other chips, so fewer numbers are able to be made per wafer. Most display drivers use 40 nanometer to 28 nanometer processes, and only  TSMC, Samsung Electronics, UMC, and GlobalFoundries can manufacture display driver ICs for OLEDs.

However, only TSMC, Samsung, and UMC were able to secure sufficient wafers to manufacture the display drivers. While other foundries are working on developing necessary process technology, they have not reached mass production. Another factor is that different panel makers require different specifications for their display driver ICs.  As the major Chinese OEMs switch models to OLED screens, the proportion of OLED smartphones are increasing. Major manufactures such as Apple and Samsung now focus on OLED smartphones. However, the current supply of OLED display driver chips is in short supply and is affecting the switch to OLED screens. Due to the lack of production capacity, the increase in AMOLED panel shipment may be constrained next year.
