Huawei reportedly plans to launch its Mate X2 foldable smartphone in the second half of 2020, according to reports from Taiwan's supply chain makers. Some of Huawei's suppliers including those for hinges and panels have begun small-volume trial production for components needed for the new foldable model, said the sources. Taiwan's hinge makers, seeing promising potential from the foldable smartphone segment, have initiated capacity expansion projects, noted the sources. Hinge specialist Jarllytec has revealed that it plans to install more batch furnaces in 2020 for the production of metal injection molding (MIM) parts for foldable smartphones and other devices. The firm has formed partnerships with two Chinese smartphone brands for design and production of hinges for their foldable models, although the company has yet to come up with a schedule for volume production, said the sources. However, due to complicated component designs for foldable smartphones, and issues concerning flexible panel supply, the sources said estimation for shipments of hinge devices for foldable smartphones will not be available until at least the second half of 2020. The smartphone is expected to bring an improved design with itself, with a better hinge mechanism as well as a better display. The Mate X2 could come with a Kirin 990 5G processor which is expected to be unveiled during MWC 2020 in Barcelona. This primary display is expected to be 6.5-inches to 6.9-inches in size, but the phone itself would have a much smaller footprint when folded to be kept inside the user’s pocket. Huawei has been leaning on Samsung Display as a primary supplier for a number of its smartphone products, sharing the supply with BOE in the Huawei P30 Pro smartphone, released in March 2019, which used a BOE flexible OLED display and an SDC rigid OLED display. Huawei switched to LG Display and SDC for the Mate 30 Pro, released in September 2019, but the upcoming Huawei P40 Pro (expected in March of this year), which is said to have a four-sided conformed curved glass edges, has been a problem for all but SDC, with both BOE and LG Display facing low yields, although LG Display seems to have resolved its yield issues and also supply OLED panels for the P40. BOE has formed a partnership with South Korean 3D glass supplier JNTC, a supplier of 3D tempered glass for SDC and others, they are still developing such products and are yield constrained. Xiaomi’s decision would have been taken following insufficient production capacity guaranteed by Visionox new folding smartphones will be limited. Huawei’s, choice of Samsung Display is both guarantee production capacity and higher quality. The second generation of Huawei Mate X is expected to be launched during the second half of 2020, perhaps on the occasion of the IFA in Berlin. Huawei’s is also working on a device that folds like the Motorola Razr.
