New OLED Smartphone Panel Production Pushes LG Share to 10% in Q419
March 22, 2020

LG Display's share of the global market for smartphone (OLED) panels has surpassed 10 percent for the first time. LG Display recorded a 10.8 percent share in the fourth quarter of 2019, according to IHS Markit. The figure represented more than a five-fold increase from 2.1 percent in the previous quarter. In 2017, its share was in the 1 percent range. The growth of LG Display’s market share is attributable to the company’s supply of plastic OLEDs for Apple's iPhone 11. According to LG Display, mobile display panels accounted for 36 percent of its sales in the fourth quarter of last year, surpassing TV panel sales for the first time in company history. In the smartphone OLED market, LG Display and Samsung Display have an overwhelming share of 92 percent. Front-running Samsung Display occupied 81.2 percent in the quarter. Its share shrank by more than 9 percentage points compared to the third quarter. Chinese display makers performance was sluggish. BOE’s share fell from 11.4 percent in the second quarter to 3.9 percent in the third quarter and to 1.6 percent in the fourth quarter. Most display companies in China faltered except Visionox, which increased its share from 1.4 percent in the third quarter to 4.1 percent in the fourth quarter. From: Maeil Business Korea
