Merck Opens OLED Production Base in Shanghai
July 26, 2020
A slowing of its mainstay liquid crystal business is reflected in Merck plans to build its first OLED materials production base in Shanghai this year. Meanwhile, its OLED lab expansion in Jinqiao in the Pudong New Area has been completed and will be in operation soon. Allan Gabor, president of Merck China, said the display domain, which is dependent on the global economy, is down a bit from last year. But as major economies across the world are restarting, it will pick up this year. “In the future, OLED displays will penetrate in small and medium-size and flexible display and will usher in a rapid increase in market share. Meanwhile, LCD (liquid crystal display) will still occupy a leading position in large-size displays,” said Ouyang Zhongshan, director of the strategic development committee with the Institute of Theoretical Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, at the Display Innovation China, one of the most important summits for the display industry. Apart from re-imaging the display industry, OLED drives the need for more advanced semiconductors, in which Merck will also keep investing. Meanwhile, Merck will participate in the third China International Import Expo, exhibiting its semiconductor business in particular. Merck is a German science and technology company with three pillar businesses — health care, life science and performance materials.
