Merck and UDC/PPG Expand OLED Material Production

In July, Merck started mass production of hole transport materials (HTM) at its new production facility in Poseung, Pyeongtaek-si, Gyeonggi-do, Korea.  HTM is a common layer used in premium OLED displays. The company has been supplying hole transport materials for large OLED panels for LG Display.  Merck expects to  expand HTM to mobile panels produced by LGD.  Merck started its OLED and organic materials businesses in 2005, opened a research center for OLED synthesis and material development in 2011 and opened an OLED application center in 2014.  In 2020, Merck announced the investment of an additional 25 billion Korean won to establish a next-generation OLED materials manufacturing facility at the Poseung National Industrial Complex in Pyeongtaek, Gyeonggi-do, South Korea.

Universal Display and PPG are making a multi-million-euro capital investment at a new Shannon, Ireland manufacturing site. The facility, announced in February 2021, will increase the production of PHOLED materials to meet growing OLED market demand.
