LG’s OLED TV panels Earn 'Eye Comfort Display' Certification from TÜV Rheinland

LG Display's OLED TV panels have received 'Eye Comfort Display' certification from independent inspection company TÜV Rheinland. TÜV Rheinland's eye comfort certification is carried out in accordance to the ISO 9241-307 standard. As part testing and certification TÜV is addressing three common concerns; blue light content, flicker, and high-quality imaging. Excessive levels of blue light have been linked to several health issues in studies, including insomnia, eye damage, vision loss, and possibly other health problems. Researchers from Taiwan's National Tsing-Hua University have repeatedly warned governments and consumers about the hazards of LEDs and excessive blue light. TÜV Rheinland found that LG Display's OLED TV panels consist of 34% blue light, which is lower than the 50% threshold. LG Display added that "while the highest spec 65-inch LCD panels produce 64% blue light, LG Display’s OLED panels emit only half that amount". Many LCD TVs with LED backlights use blue LEDs with color filters.

Earlier this year, Samsung receivedthe same certification from TÜV Rheinland for its mobile OLED displays that are said to emit 61% less blue light than conventional LCD displays in smartphones. These advances will be brought to mid-size OLED panels later, Samsung said.

Another concern when using a display is flicker and most of the time the brightness level in an LCD TV is regulated by the use of PWM (pulse width modulation), or in other words flicker. By modulating the flicker cycle brightness levels can be regulated. TÜV says that LG Display's OLED TV panels have passed its tests for flicker. Other tests have shown that the panels are essentially flicker-free. Furthermore, the OLED TVs "met every testing criteria including in the high color range and High Dynamic Range categories. The company scored 0.87% in the light reflection category, which is half of that of LCD panels". As such, TÜV recognizes LG Display's OLED TV panel "as displays beneficial for eye health". These panels are used in all OLED TVs from LG, Sony, Hisense, Panasonic, Philips, and others sold on the consumer market. LG Display will be encouraging its partners to use TÜV's certification mark, the company said.
