LGE Finally Concedes – Will Use OLED Panels For LG V30

LGE has been one of the only holdouts in adopting OLED displays for smartphones, but with all the emphasis by Samsung, Apple and now Google, the company is going to use a curved OLED display panel on the LG V30 flagship that’s will hit the market later this year according to The Investor. LG Display agreed on deals to supply curved OLED panels to its sister company LG Electronics that manufactures smartphones. Apart from LG Display’s sister company, the OLED manufacturer is also said to supply similar panels to Xiaomi, the same sources said.

Both Xiaomi and LG Electronics are looking to acquire large quantities of curved OLED display panels for their upcoming flagships that are scheduled to be released in the second half of 2017. In LG’s case, that flagship is believed to be the LG V30, while Xiaomi is expected to release the successor to the Mi Note 2 in the final quarter of 2017, though some recent rumors suggested that the Mi Note 3 might actually debut earlier in the year than its predecessor did. Both LG Electronics and Xiaomi are said to start receiving curved OLED display panels from LG Display by the end of the current quarter, while the panels themselves are rather similar to the ones featured on the Samsung Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8 Plus, industry sources claim.  LG Display previously supplied panels for both the LG V20 and the Xiaomi Mi Note 2, though most units of the latter used displays made by other manufacturers as the South Korean company was still working on improving the yield rates of its curved OLED panels at that time. While the idea of the Mi Note 3 shipping with a curved display isn’t surprising given how its predecessor also boasted one, the same cannot be said for the LG V30. LG is still in the process of advertising its recently launched G6 flagship that features a unique design language and is striving to be completely different than Samsung’s new high-end handset lineup, but if this latest report is true, it seems that LG might take its two flagship smartphone families in completely different directions in the future.
