LGD’s New CEO Puts His Stamp on the OLED Company
June 29, 2020
LG Display changed its company tag line for the first time in eight years, to “The Best Display Solution Company” from “Global No.1 Display Company.” LG said it reflected the company’s desire to provide customers with the best service, process, system and talent. LG Display said the new goal represented its commitment to customer. LGD said, it will also look at business from an ecosystem perspective rather than a display panel manufacturer going forward. Five behavioral changes expected from employees under the new company goal will be: customer first, insight driver, agility, thoroughness and open collaboration. The new vision for the company, will be “You Dream, We Display.” The company will work to put large-sized OLED panels into the mainstream, turnaround its plastic mobile OLED, business and restructure its LCD business faster. “Many uncertainties lied ahead but it also presents the company with new opportunities”, LG Display CEO Chung Ho-young said, in a statement. Our interpretation, the new CEO is trying to distance himself from the old management, but not too far. Best vs. No. 1 is not a great leap but necessary when the company will trail BOE, CSoT and SDC in capacity. For LGD, the key is can they increase their lead in OLED TV panel technology and production given what Samsung is doing with QD 1.0 and 2.0; TCL is doing with IJP of OLEDs I a JV with JOLED and with whatever BOE is doing. LGD needs to get both Gen 6 flexible OLED fabs operating at high yields, but the biggest challenge will be when it can finish the Gen 10.5 OLED fab in Paju. Samsung looks to be delaying its decision regarding QD 2.0 (blue LED nano rods to replace the 3 -Tandem blue OLEDs) for one year due to the COVID-19 slowdown in TV sales or perhaps recent technical difficulties.
