LGD Delays Gen 10.5 OLED Fab
January 10, 2020
In line with their new CEO’s drive for profitability, the Elec reports that LG Display is delaying its P10 10.5-Gen OLED TV fab plans, which was expected to start mass production (with 30,000 monthly substrate) in H1 2022, but the date now shifted to 2023. LG Display notified deposition tool supplier YAS, that it is delaying its plans. YAS originally planned to build a new plant for manufacturing 10.5G equipment in August this year, but it is not yet completed. An official said on the 27th, "Originally, we tried to rush the construction of a factory in line with the mass production schedule of LG Display's 10.5th generation OLED production line." LG Display sent a letter of intent (LOI) for the 10.5 generation OLED organic material deposition equipment to YAS in March this year. The LOI required equipment to be available in February next year for installation in Paju P10 factory after six months of equipment assembly and testing. Other main suppliers for the P10 fab include Applied Materials, Nikon and Jusung Engineering. In July 2019, LGD announced an additional $2.5 billion investment in the P10 line, but since then the company has announced early retirements, elimination of most LCD jobs and a major cost reduction program to stem the tide of 2-years of negative profits. In another cost cutting move, LGD’s new CEO, Chung Ho-young told reporters, "It's too late to start mass-production at the end of 2019," referring to when volume production of TV panels would begin, in a recent meeting with reporters. He suggested that volume production will begin after the first quarter of 2020. LG Display started to operate the plant in August, which was a delay from the originally planned first half of this 2019.
Mass production of the Gen 10.5 OLED fab is expected to be at least 6 months later than the first half of 2022. LG Display installed CVD equipment for TFTs at the P10 plant in May this year. The company plans to use 2 Applied Materials and 1 Jusung Engineering tool to support the 30,000 monthly substrate capacity.
In July of this year, LG Display's board of directors decided to invest 3 trillion won in the 10.5th generation OLED production line. By 2023, it planned to increase production capacity to 45,000 sheets per month. Two months later, in September, CEO Chung Ho-young was appointed as CEO and cut 25 percent of the existing personnel the next month. From: The Elec
