LG Aiming to Fix VRR for OLED Gaming Monitors
A new firmware update for LG’s CX OLED TVs caused the sets’ Game mode to lose substantial amounts of brightness. Gamers reported drops of between 100 and 150 nits - or around 20-25% - from the brightness levels they experienced prior to firmware number 03.21.09 being installed on the impacted models. LG has not only acknowledged the issue exists but pledges a firmware update fix within weeks.
LG’s statement to Forbes in full:
“LG has been made aware that its latest firmware release impacted the maximum brightness in gaming mode on some 2020 TV models.
A new firmware will be released in the upcoming weeks to correct the brightness level, while maintaining the improvements in handling HDR and color banding addressed by the current firmware. ”
Issues such as raised black levels with Dolby Vision content, eARC handshake problems and color banding when streaming via the TVs’ internal apps that 03.21.09 fixed should stay fixed once the dim gaming mode firmware solution turns up. The update 03.21.09 has reportedly made worse the CX OLEDs issue with raised black levels when gaming in variable refresh rates.
According to multiple users of AVSforum, though, following the application of new update 03.21.09, peak white in calibrated HDR Game mode now measures around 525 nits, having previously measured closer to 650 nits.
That equates to approaching a 20% reduction in the brightness of the lightest parts of an HDR game visuals, so the change is visible to the naked eye rather than being something only noticeable with a light meter. Following the application of this update, peak brightness in Game mode is now more than 100 nits darker than that of the CX’s already muted (relative to other presets) Filmmaker Mode.
Games are also apparently running significantly less brightly on CX OLED models such as the OLED48CX. There doesn’t yet appear to be any release notes for this new firmware version on LG’s UK or US websites. Some have recounted that it is a bid to fix the shifting black level/flickering issues when using VRR on its OLED sets (also recently witnessed, by the way, on a Samsung 55Q90T!). According to other reports on the same AVSForum discussion, though, the 03.21.09 update actually seems to have made near-black flickering more rather than less noticeable.
CX owners report the update fixes/improves an issue with raised blacks when watching some Dolby Vision content; that it seems to reduce color banding in some internal apps; that it fixes some eARC issues; and possibly that it fixes the issue of raised black levels when gaming in VRR mode.
