Kopin Reports a 2nd μLED Micro Display Maker to Buy Use Its P-Si Backplane Technology

Kopin® Corporation signed a multiyear agreement with a leading Japanese electronics Company to develop 2K x 2K full-color μLED micro displays on silicon. Under the agreement, Kopin will develop and supply its proprietary backplane silicon wafers and its new partner will develop bonding and color conversion processes. The companies expect to demonstrate 1”-diagonal full-color 2K x 2K μLED micro displays within 24 months.  This development program similar to Kopin’s agreement with Jade Bird Display to develop micro displays with up to 4 million nits, is customer funded.

The Micro LED micro display is still in an early stage of development and requires new process developments including bonding of LED arrays to Si backplane and color conversion of blue emission to red or green. Kopin CEO John Fan said, “Luminance of 100,000 nits can create new and exciting applications for micro displays and satisfy the demanding requirements of certain AR and MR applications.”  Kopin still believes that OLED micro displays will be the most effective technology for certain micro display applications.
