January TV Panel Pricing Shows the Effects of Reduced Production

January panel pricing was mixed, with monitor and notebook panel pricing down and TV pricing up, and in the case of notebooks and monitors prices were generally down a bit more than we expected. Overall January LCD TV panel prices recovered 0.7%, sequentially lead by smaller sizes up 1.5%

January panel pricing was mixed, with monitor and notebook panel pricing down and TV pricing up, and in the case of notebooks and monitors prices were generally down a bit more than we expected. Overall January LCD TV panel prices recovered 0.7%, sequentially lead by smaller sizes up 1.5%

Early last year most TV panel prices were declining moderately through April/May but the combination of additional Chinese capacity, US tariffs on Chinese goods, and slowing Chinese demand caused competition between TV panel producers to escalate and TV panel pricing deteriorated quickly. By October pricing began to level off as fab closings and reduced utilization began to take hold across the industry, and while TV panel prices began to stabilize, but most sizes are still under water.

For the year, LCD panel maker results The table below shows 2019 full year panel sales revenue on a Y/Y basis. It is a stunning representation of the regional changes in the industry as production for every non-Chinese panel maker was down, with the exception of JDI, which had extraordinarily low shipments in 2018 and every Chinese supplier (other than Tianma) was up Y/Y.
