Huawei to Use TomTom as a Substitute for Google Maps
January 27, 2020

Huawei has reached a deal with TomTom to use its maps and services on smartphones, having been blacklisted months ago from working with Google.
This partnership will mean Huawei can use TomTom maps and navigation on its own custom operating system. Perhaps even on the P40 series phones launching soon.
The use of TomTom is another sign that Huawei is continuing adjust to the Google ban. By using TomTom for its mapping data, a move that echoes Apple when it moved away from Google Maps to launch Apple Maps, the company is able to offer not only an alternative to Google Maps (say Huawei Maps) but also support all the apps that need map support on their new HarmonyOS - if and when they opt to go that route. With Huawei still out in the cold and its flagship phone launch expected in March, this deal is another part of the puzzle solved, but it's by no means the complete answer.
