Huawei to Exploit Dearth of Driver IC Capacity in China
China’s semiconductor fab business is unable to compete globally in the processor market as it is still limited to the 28nm node, while TSM and Samsung are working toward developing sub 5 nm production, but Huawei’s semi sub HiSilicon has just taped out a self-developed OLED display driver chip that is expected to be used by Huawei in a number of products next year. As display drivers tend to be produced on 28nm or larger nodes, it is a logical step for Huawei until the trade situation with the US is resolved. Samsung is the leader in the OLED driver space with Magnachip, the only non-Korean company among the top 4, and China has a paltry 1% share of the OLED driver market, so there is considerable room for Huawei to become at least a supplier to itself. Viewtrix, a Chinese company that says it’s the 3rd largest OLED driver producer on the Mainland, has developed its own display drivers, has just completed a $46m financing from Qualcomm, Sequoia, and other VCs, with previous rounds including Xiaomi and AVIC, the state–owned Aviation Industry Corporation of China that has been involved in financings for the display industry in the past.
