Huawei Develops OLED DDIC to Fill the Current Void
Huawei HiSilicon’s first self-developed DDIC has completed the trial production phase and will start production by the end of this year. This new chip will be first used in Huawei products and then be sold to other manufacturers. Huawei started research and development of screen driver chips in 2019 in cooperation with BOE to achieve its development goal. Huawei manufactured its first OLED driver IC in the second half of 2019. As smartphones, tablets, and more products use OLED screens and come under the premium user experience the demand for OLED DDICs have increased just when the IC shortages were created by Samsung shutting down its Austin semiconductor plant, the major source of OLED DDICs. OLED driver chips need to be customized for each panel design, making it difficult for foundries to mass-produce as is their preference. BOE with the 3rd highest share of OLED display production share in the world is heavily dependent on global manufacturers. Therefore, Huawei will help Chinese display makers by providing a controllable IC source. Samsung and Magnachip had about a 90% share of global OLED DDIC orders last year, with the remaining 9% supplied by Taiwan’s TSMC.
