HKC Adds a 120K substrate/Mo. LCD Large Area Fab
May 31, 2020
HKC is expanding with a number of new fabs either under construction or in pre-mass production mode. On April 26ththey announced the opening of their Mianyang Gen 8.6 LCD fab with a two-phase stated capacity of 120,000 sheets/month, based on both a-Si (amorphous silicon) and IGZO (Indium Gallium Zinc Oxide) backplanes, and MMG capability. The project is expected to cost $3.4b US when completed and is partially financed by local and provincial governments.
With equipment delivery times being pushed out due to COVID-19 crisis full mass production is scheduled to begin in late October, roughly 100 days later than planned. The phase 1/phase 2 timing will be based on yield and demand. Should phase 2 be delayed, it will change the supply/demand balance and therefore panel pricing beginning in 2021 and extending into 2022.
