Google Fold to Come w/7.57” Display from SDC
about Google making its own chip for Pixel devices, codenamed “Whitechapel.” The rumored ARM-based chip is reportedly being designed in partnership with Samsung (just like Google is doing with its foldable display), and it will fall somewhere between the Snapdragon 888 and Snapdragon 865. What’s more, notable leaker Yogesh claims that Whitechapel is a 5-nanometer chip similar to the Snapdragon 870, but with enhanced machine learning and AI capabilities. While the new chip is tipped to be used in the Pixel 6, if the Pixel Fold launches alongside Google’s next flagship smartphone, there’s reason to believe both phones will boast the same chip, or at least something similar. With a 7.57-inch 120Hz LTPO in-folding display panel apparently in the works, and the potential for Google to offer an affordable foldable opposed to Samsung’s pricey Galaxy Z Fold, the Pixel Fold could kick off the year of the foldables if it arrives later in 2021.
The Google Pixel Fold remains in the rumor stage, but a new leak suggests the device will have a 7.57-inch 120Hz LTPO panel courtesy of Samsung Display, according to Ross Young, CEO at DSCC. Young also expects a 7.11-inch foldable from OPPO, a 8.2-inch foldable from vivo, and a 8.1-inch from Xiaomi. The latter had an 83% surge in growth and now has Samsung in its target as did Huawei about a year and half ago. Google Pixel Fold make its debut in October if the company decides to unveil it alongside its Google Pixel 6 flagship. With the pivot towards foldable smartphones, the traditional candy bar form factor seems increasingly uninspired, although Apple remains on the side-lines ready to release the iPhone 13 which is looking more outdated by the day. Sales of the iPhone 12 have been great so far, resulting in a "volume super-cycle". Apple has put its money on the iPhone 13 selling even more units that the iPhone 12 but with the novelty of even more foldables this year, and affordable price points to boot, it may struggle to replicate the success of the iPhone 12.
Based on Google’s previous Pixel phone pricing expect a more affordable alternative to the $1,799 price point of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2.
