Samsung has announced the Galaxy S10 Lite is now available in the US. But if Apple had fortunate timing for its iPhone SE 2020 launch yesterday, Samsung’s timing is terrible:
- The Galaxy S10 Lite is a cut-price version of Samsung’s Galaxy S10 flagship, It's finally in the US and wider, now.
- It’s been reviewed by many and the most used label is pretty beastly: it features a decent 6.7-inch OLED FHD display, a triple camera setup, the Snapdragon 855 CPU, 8GB of RAM, 128GB of expandable storage, a 4,500mAh battery, and a plastic chassis.
- It’s late-2019 spec in 2020 for a cut-price deal, and actually should be an exciting smartphone for people who don’t want to overpay for 5G they won’t use. The Android Authority review praised it while noting a few shortcomings you might expect from a Lite model, although missing a headphone jack, no wireless charging, and no expandable storage are all quibbles.
- But Samsung priced it at $650. It couldn’t be more poorly placed in this market right now, just when lower-priced phones are all anyone can talk about.
- The OnePlus 8 is only $50 more for the latest Snapdragon 865, a 90Hz high refresh rate panel without compromise, and solid build.
- And that iPhone SE 2020 for $400 makes the S10 Lite look crazily priced.
- Even if the S10 Lite beats the iPhone SE on a bunch of useful specs (bigger screen, storage, RAM, battery, likely better camera overall), the value proposition doesn’t feel right.
- The Galaxy S10 Lite will start to see discounts that bring it to a level that makes sense.
- The S10e, the cheapest S10 option at launch back in June last year, started at $749 (it's now $599 outright) and was acclaimed for being a good option from Samsung for affordability. But there’s no S20e in 2020, and 10 months later, the S10 Lite just $100 off the S10e just isn’t cheap enough.
