First Neo QLED Released w/800 Dimming Zones and 2000 nits
Samsung’s is positioning the Neo QLED Mini LED as its flagship technology (excluding the very expensive Micro LED sets). The QE65QN95A is the first Neo QLED a 4K model in Samsung’s 2021 range, and it purports to offer a huge upgrade on last year’s equivalent without any increase in price.
Samsung is pitching the model against LG’s popular C-class OLED. “The Neo QLED is able to render the best picture quality with improved contrast and luminance through upscaling backed by artificial intelligence,” a Samsung spokesperson said.
The Neo QLED will be made available in both 4K and 8K resolutions and come in sizes ranging from 50 to 85 inches. The pricing is the same or slightly higher than LG’s OLED TVs announced this year. The entry-level 4K 50-inch Neo QLED will retail at 2.29 million won ($2,045), while the high-end 8K 85-inch range will start from 13.8 million won. There will be five different sizes released in Korea -- 50, 55, 65, 75, 85 inches -- in 4K resolution and three types -- 65, 75, 85 inches -- in 8K. Outside of the home turf, Samsung will roll out 8K models in four sizes – 55, 65, 75, 85 inches – and 4K sets in five sizes as in Korea.
The Mini LED backlight works with a new 'micro layer' that guides the light through the quantum dots. They claim there is no light leakage or blooming.
Samsung doesn’t quote official figures for these dimming zones, the QN95A has just under 800 of them. Last year’s Q95T and Q90T are thought to have had around 120 dimming zones. On a TV, 55” or larger 800 dimming zones will not resolve all the color accurately since the larger the zone, the greater the effect of the averaging of all the colors in the zone. Samsung did not quote response times, which is reportedly around 5 ms. The luminance measured at pure while was 2700 nits at 10% APR for HDR. The standard picture luminance was measured at 2,000 nit
