Epistar Looking to Mini LEDs to Reach Profitability
May 31, 2020
Epistar said that it is seeing surging demands for Mini LED display and fine-pitch displays. With its mature miniaturized LED technology, the company is expecting to ship about 689.2 billion units of LED chip in 2020.
Sounds like a lot, but with a 90% yield and FHD or 4K resolution, it would yield 100k FHD or 25k 4K panels.
Epistar is reportedly supplying Apple for the coming Mini LED-based iPad Pro and MacBook. The Taiwan-based chip maker has increased its investment for capacity expansion and turned 95% of its blue LED capacity in Taiwan into Mini LED production to meet the demands of Apple products. Epistar is providing its Mini LED products for TV and laptop and expects to supply mini LEDs for the launch of Apple’s iPad and MacBook. Epistar expects to swing into profitability in the fourth quarter of 2020 if the impact of the coronavirus pandemic eases off in the third quarter, according to company president Chin-yung Fan. Epistar suffered net operating loss for the sixth consecutive quarter in first-quarter 2020 at NT$1.241 billion (US$41.2 million).
