CSoT Begins MP for Gen 6 OLED Line in Wuhan
January 10, 2020
ChinaStar has started shipping panels from their Gen 6 flexible OLED fab in Wuhan. Aside from a small Gen 4.5 pilot line, this marks ChinaStar’s first entry into the small panel OLED market, names shown, you get the idea that it is a crowded and competitive market. With a capacity of 45,000 sheets/month, ChinaStar has the theoretical capability to produce almost 36m smartphones approximately the size of the current TCL Plex, although yielded results would be considerably lower, and while that sounds impressive, by the end of 2022, without any new projects, ChinaStar would have only a 4% share of the small panel OLED market in terms of capacity. While ChinaStar’s efforts in the small panel OLED space are relatively minor, it is the opposite in the large panel OLED space where the company is the only operator of a Gen 10+ large panel OLED fab. That will change early next year when BOE opens its Gen 10+ large panel OLED fab in Wuhan, but for a while, ChinaStar rules the Gen 10+ OLED fab roost. By the end of 2022 LG Display will also be producing at its Gen 10+ large panel OLED fab in Paju but ChinaStar should be producing at a 2ndGen 10+ large panel OLED fab, making them the largest OLED TV panel producer using Gen 10+ fabs, while LG Display will remain the largest producer of OLED TV panels based on total capacity.
