Chinese Customs Officers Can Tell the Difference Between OLEDs and LCDs
March 25, 2019 Earlier this week in Shenzhen, China a “Shenzhen technology company” reported the importation of a shipment of ~22,500 smartphone LCD displays and an additional ~123,300 ‘liquid crystal screen to the Shenzhen Bay Customs Office. A relatively commonplace event, it drew little attention as the declared value was 528,100 yuan or ~$78,700 US. As it turned out, customs inspectors decided to do an inspection and discovered that the displays were not LCD displays but OLED displays, which increased their value from $78,700 to $1.67m, or 21 times the declared value. The units were confiscated by the anti-smuggling division of Shenzhen customs and the commend customs inspectors were able to identify the difference between LCD and OLED smartphone displays. The unnamed Shenzhen technology company will face a fine up to 3 times the taxable value of the goods and will have to pay a fee for the ‘privilege’ of having their container inspected!
